Libya’s parliament approves election agreement — Anadolu Agency
Libya’s House of Representatives unanimously approved the final agreement of the 4+4 committee, which is intended to pave the way for presidential and parliamentary elections. Lawmakers made the decision during a session in Benghazi in the east of the country, Anadolu Agency reports, citing a parliamentary statement.
What the agreement provides for
The document contains provisions on reorganizing the board of Libya’s High National Electoral Commission and settling disputed issues in the legal framework for presidential and parliamentary elections.
The agreement also provides for holding the vote on condition of a unified executive authority and united national institutions. The maximum period for this has been set at 24 months.

UN-mediated talks
The 4+4 committee signed the final agreement on August 30 during an official ceremony at the headquarters of the UN Support Mission in Libya in Tripoli. The committee includes four representatives of the Tripoli-based Government of National Unity and four representatives of the eastern Libyan authorities.
The committee held talks with UN support, seeking to overcome the political deadlock and advance a roadmap toward elections and a unified executive authority. On September 3, the UN mission submitted the agreement to the House of Representatives and the High Council of State, giving both bodies one month from the date of signing to approve it.
Libya remains politically divided between the Government of National Unity led by Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah and the government in the east of the country, appointed by the House of Representatives and headed by Prime Minister Osama Hammad.
