Libya plans commemorative stamp to honour former army chief

Libya’s General Post Company has discussed plans with the Ministry of Defence to issue a commemorative postage stamp to honour former Chief of Staff of the Libyan Army, Field Marshal Mohamed al-Haddad.

The proposal was reviewed during a coordination meeting between company officials and a defence ministry committee tasked with organising events to mark the occasion.

Al-Haddad was killed on 23 December 2025 in a plane crash near Ankara while returning to Libya from an official visit to Turkey.

The chairman of Libya Post, Sami al-Ghazewi, said the initiative reflects efforts to honour national figures through postage stamps that preserve their legacy and sacrifices.

He added that postage stamps play a historical role in documenting Libya’s national memory and preserving the country’s prominent figures.

For his part, the head of the defence ministry committee, Major General Abdulbaset al-Sharea, said the ministry attaches importance to commemorating the late army chief, describing it as a reflection of respect for military leadership.
He also highlighted the role of postage stamps in preserving national heritage for future generations.
