Libya desert tragedy: Six migrants found dead after vehicle breaks down
Libyan authorities have recovered the bodies of six migrants in the country’s southeastern desert after their vehicle reportedly broke down.
The bodies were found in a desert area about 200 kilometres northwest of Jalu. Two were discovered inside the vehicle, while three others were located around four kilometres away. The sixth was found roughly 10 kilometres from the vehicle after security personnel tracked footprints in the area, Reuters reported.
Authorities also rescued 19 migrants on Sunday. Documents found in the vehicle indicated that its owner was from Chad, while his brother was among those rescued.
According to the Directorate, the migrants had been travelling with another vehicle. The owner’s brother said that the second vehicle took fuel from the disabled vehicle before continuing its journey, leaving those travelling in the broken-down vehicle behind.
Libya has long been a major transit route for migrants attempting to reach Europe, with many travelling through remote desert areas before attempting the dangerous Mediterranean crossing. The journey exposes migrants to severe risks, including extreme heat, dehydration and vehicle breakdowns.
