Libya carries out first Shockwave IVL heart procedure

Libya has carried out its first heart procedure using Shockwave intravascular lithotripsy (IVL), a technique used to treat severe coronary artery calcification.

The procedure was performed on Sunday at Al-Istiqlal General Hospital, with support from the Healthcare Services Support and Development Agency.

Shockwave IVL uses a specialised catheter to deliver sonic pressure waves that break up hardened calcium deposits in the artery walls, helping to widen arteries, improve blood flow and prepare patients for further treatment such as stent placement.

The technique is considered particularly effective in complex cases where conventional methods are less successful.
