A member of Libya’s 4+4 committee says a final draft political agreement is ready for signing at a closing meeting scheduled for Tuesday.
Libya Al-Ahrar TV quoted Abduljalil Al-Shawash as saying that a drafting team is completing the final version, which will focus on the electoral track and a timeline for elections. He said it does not cover executive or military arrangements.
Al-Shawash added that the agreement sets out a preliminary transitional phase ahead of elections and addresses shortcomings in previous electoral laws to ensure they can be implemented.
He said discussions on how to formally adopt the deal would follow the signing, in coordination with the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).
The 4+4 committe member warned that any attempts to obstruct implementation could lead to sanctions, adding that the agreement aims to end institutional divisions and move the country into a new political phase.
It may be worth noting that the UN mission in April said the 4+4 group had reached an understanding in Rome on restructuring the High National Elections Commission, including how its leadership would be selected.
