A group of 20 migrants expelled from the United States has landed in Liberia, representing the initial cohort of as many as 1,200 foreign nationals that the West African nation has pledged to receive. This development positions Liberia as the most recent African state to join Washington’s deportation initiative under the contentious immigration enforcement measures championed by President Donald Trump.

The aircraft conveying these individuals touched down at Liberia’s international airport just before 1:00 pm local time on Thursday. Following arrival, the passengers boarded a coach that departed from the facility situated near the capital, Monrovia. Officials from the Liberian Commission on Repatriation, Resettlement and Reintegration were observed attending to the newcomers, while journalists were held back and denied the opportunity to interview them.

Earlier in the week, on Tuesday, Liberia declared its intention to admit up to 1,200 foreign nationals deported from the U.S. over the coming twelve months. The authorities noted that these individuals are permitted to leave the country at any time or seek asylum. Furthermore, the government affirmed that it has neither requested nor obtained any form of compensation or incentives in return for its involvement, characterizing the arrangement as purely humanitarian in nature. As part of this collaboration, Liberia is slated to receive assistance in administering the program and enhancing its broader migration infrastructure.

This agreement follows similar pacts between Washington and several other African nations, including Sierra Leone, Equatorial Guinea, Ghana, Rwanda, South Sudan, Cameroon, Eswatini, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The U.S. administration maintains that its legal restrictions only prevent the direct repatriation of such individuals to their countries of origin, thereby justifying the use of third-party nations. During his second term, Trump has broadened the scope of deportable individuals, focusing on those who previously held legal safeguards that permitted them to reside and work in the U.S. due to fears of persecution at home.
