Liberia has taken a significant step toward strengthening its football development system with the arrival of a European delegation exploring the establishment of a youth academy and long-term football investment partnership in the country.
The move comes as Mr. Farid Adjaoud, Managing Partner of Adjaoud Consulting, landed at Roberts International Airport on Sunday, June 21, 2026, to begin a high-level assessment mission for the proposed Cluj Academy Liberia initiative. The project is linked to Romanian football powerhouse CFR 1907 Cluj and is expected to focus on youth development, education, and elite player pathway creation.
Speaking upon arrival and during preliminary engagements, Adjaoud said the mission is aimed at understanding Liberia’s football ecosystem and evaluating the feasibility of long-term investment in structured youth development.
“We are here to assess the environment, the talent base, and the structural readiness for a sustainable football academy model that can connect Liberian players to international opportunities,” he said.
The visit follows diplomatic and technical engagements led by Liberia’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Atty. Cornelia Wonkerleh Kruah, who earlier this year held strategic meetings with European football stakeholders in Paris. According to ministry officials, those discussions were designed to translate international interest into local football infrastructure.
A ministry official described the visit as a “direct outcome of sustained diplomatic engagement aimed at bringing credible football investment to Liberia.”
Adjaoud Consulting, a French sports development firm, has previously supported academy projects in Kenya, Rwanda, and Burkina Faso, giving added weight to the Liberia proposal, which is now entering its feasibility phase.
Mr. Adjaoud is being accompanied by Liberian scout and sports advisor to the Liberian Embassy in France, Mr. Mohammed Diallo, who has played a key role in linking the project to Liberian authorities.
Over the next several days, the delegation is expected to hold formal discussions with Minister Kruah and senior officials at the Ministry of Youth and Sports to define the structure, governance, and operational framework of the proposed academy. The Liberia Football Association (LFA) is also actively engaged in the process.
LFA President Mustapha I. Raji is expected to meet the delegation at the Football House in Congo Town, where discussions will focus on regulatory compliance, player development pathways, and integration with Liberia’s existing football structures.
“Any academy of this nature must align with national football governance systems and contribute to strengthening our domestic leagues and youth development pipeline,” an LFA source noted.
Beyond institutional meetings, the delegation will also conduct field visits to local clubs and training grounds across Monrovia. These scouting sessions aim to evaluate emerging talent and assess the capacity of grassroots football systems to support a professional academy model.
The Ministry of Youth and Sports has described the visit as a milestone in Liberia’s efforts to expand international partnerships in sports development. The initiative is being coordinated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Liberia’s Ambassador to France, Teeko Tozay Yorlay.
Officials say the broader objective is to create a structured pathway for talented Liberian players to transition into European football systems, using CFR Cluj’s network as a potential gateway.
As discussions continue, stakeholders say the outcome of the mission could determine whether Liberia secures one of its most ambitious football development partnerships in recent years, potentially reshaping the country’s youth football landscape for a new generation.
