Lesotho Begins Work on National AI Strategy and Data Centre Blueprint
The initiative forms part of Lesotho’s broader digital transformation agenda, which seeks to use technology, data and innovation to improve public services, strengthen digital infrastructure and support socio-economic development.
Lesotho has commenced a five-day workshop to develop a National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy and Data Centre Blueprint, as the government moves to establish a framework for responsible AI adoption and strengthen the country’s digital infrastructure.
The workshop, running from 17 to 21 August 2026 in Maseru, is being organised by the Ministry of Information, Communications, Science, Technology and Innovation (MICSTI) in collaboration with the United Nations in Lesotho. It brings together key stakeholders to shape strategic direction for AI adoption and the development of secure, resilient and sustainable data infrastructure.
Deputy Prime Minister Justice Nthomeng Majara, who delivered the keynote address, called for a cautious and strategic approach to AI development. She stressed the importance of assessing Lesotho’s existing capabilities and establishing the necessary safeguards, infrastructure, policies and human capacity before scaling AI investments.
Majara also emphasised that Lesotho’s AI strategy should reflect the country’s national interests and readiness, ensuring that technological advancement delivers sustainable benefits while enabling the country to manage the potential risks associated with emerging technologies.
Minister of Information, Communications, Science, Technology and Innovation Nthati Moorosi highlighted the government’s progress in developing policies to support digital transformation. She noted that more than 100 stakeholders were brought together in 2025 to validate the Artificial Intelligence Policy, Data Management Policy, and Broadband and Shared Infrastructure Policy.
The National AI Strategy is expected to provide a framework for the responsible and strategic deployment of AI in Lesotho, while the Data Centre Blueprint will guide the development of secure, resilient and sustainable infrastructure capable of supporting the country’s growing digital requirements.
