A powerful winter storm has swept across the high-altitude mountain kingdom of Lesotho, leaving the region buried under a thick layer of fresh snow. On Thursday, June 4, 2026, a heavy alpine system dumped what appeared to be between 15 and 20 centimeters of snow across the highlands, marking an aggressive and icy start to the southern African winter.

As reported by journalist Jim Mohlala for Briefly, the sudden cold snap has completely transformed the landscape around Sani Top, an exposed mountain outpost positioned roughly 2,874 meters (9,447 feet) above sea level. Visuals captured by the Masoba-Soba Lodge and circulated online by Southern Drakensberg show local infrastructure, rooftops, and mountain routes entirely swallowed by a deep blanket of white snow and ice, confirming that winter has claimed the territory with full force.

The dramatic early June snowfall reveals both the beauty and the danger of Lesotho’s unique climate. While the kingdom is celebrated as a premier African winter sports destination that regularly draws powder-chasers to its peaks, the environment remains incredibly unforgiving. The core winter season runs from June through August, a period where highland temperatures frequently plummet well below freezing. In the most exposed mountainous areas, the mercury can drop past -18°C (0ºF), bringing severe frost, high winds, and frequent hail.

Conditions at this altitude deteriorate rapidly during heavy storms. The steep Sani Pass road is notorious for turning into a treacherous sheet of ice, making transit highly dangerous for anyone without specialized vehicles and extensive cold-weather preparation. With winter conditions expected to persist heavily through August, the deep snowpack on the higher peaks will likely remain a fixture of the landscape for months to come.
