Kwayiba Sends Stellies To Carling Knockout…

Stellenbosch FC became the final team to book their spot in the Carling Knockout quarter-finals after defeating Durban City 2-0 on Wednesday night.

Teams: Durban City v Stellenbosch FC
Result: 0-2
Scorers: Kwayiba (84′, 90+4′)

City head coach Eric Tinkler did make three changes after the weekend’s CAF Confederation Cup in Mauritius, as Letsie Koapeng, Alou Doumbia and Fezile Gcaba came in for Jean Lumbamba, Bandile Shandu and John Mokone.

The hosts, however, were forced into making a change after 16 minutes when veteran attacking midfielder Gaston Sirino was forced off with an injury and replaced by Samkelo Maseko.

The early stages of the first half proved to be quite a dull affair for a cup encounter, as neither side was able to take control of the contest, with both goalkeepers barely needing to make saves in the opening 30 minutes of the match.

After a disappointing first half, the first real effort arrived five minutes after the break when Haashim Domingo was given time and space to unleash a strike from distance that forced goalkeeper Nathan Garrow into a fine save.

The game sparked into life around the 70-minute mark after a late challenge sparked a mini-scuffle on the pitch, with both sets of players needing to be separated, although the incident did have an effect on the tempo going forward.

Stellenbosch got their first opening seven minutes later when Terrence Mashego did well to pick out the run of Daniels, who saw his header brilliantly saved by City goalkeeper Frederick Asare.

The visitors went on to bag the winning goal with seven minutes left on the clock when Kazeem was set free down the left flank and put the ball on a plate for Sinoxolo Kwayiba, who sent a first-time finish past Asare for his second goal in as many games.

Kwayiba put City out of their misery in second-half stoppage time by finishing off a well-worked counter-attack to seal Stellenbosch’s spot in the last eight.
