Kenya Completes Suam One-Stop Border Post for Uganda Trade

The newly built Suam One-Stop Border Post (OSBP) has reached full structural completion along the Kenya-Uganda border in Trans Nzoia County. Government officials confirmed that the bilateral facility is now awaiting official commissioning and operational deployment.

Located in Endebess Constituency, the modern border complex integrates several state agencies under a single roof. This setup will bring together the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS), immigration, port health, and agricultural inspection services.

Internal Security and National Administration Principal Secretary, Dr. Raymond Omollo, stated that strategic investments in border infrastructure enhance the movement of people and goods. He noted the facility will strengthen regional connectivity, trade, and tourism across the East African region.

Constructed to streamline regional logistics, the new facility is equipped with integrated customs facilities and immigration counters. It also features automated surveillance infrastructure designed to reduce clearance times, improve service delivery, and facilitate faster cross-border trade.

The new facility is expected to ease operational pressure on the Busia and Malaba border crossings. By providing an alternative corridor, it strengthens key trade routes linking Kenya to Uganda, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Management of the daily operations will fall under the Border Control and Operations Coordination Committee (BCOCC). This committee is coordinated by the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration to ensure effective inter-agency collaboration.

Security officials indicated that this joint committee is crucial for maintaining enhanced border security. It will also provide a coordinated response to transnational threats, while actively supporting legitimate trade and travel across the frontier.

The infrastructure development was funded with financial support from the African Development Bank (AfDB). The project was integrated with the extensive upgrading of the forty-five-kilometer highway linking the border town of Suam to Kitale.

This road upgrade remains central to boosting local accessibility and easing the transit of heavy commercial vehicles. Prior to this development, transporters faced significant delays due to poor road conditions during the wet seasons.

President William Ruto is expected to commission the facility alongside Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni. The upcoming operationalization of this post represents a collaborative effort by both nations to eliminate non-tariff barriers and lower transit costs.

Local traders and business owners in Trans Nzoia County have welcomed the completion. Government representatives have urged residents to position themselves to utilize the new infrastructure to expand their agricultural trade across the border.

China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCE) served as the main contractor for the project. The company worked closely with local engineers to deliver the structural components of the expansive twenty-four-acre facility on schedule.

The State Department continues to monitor the final administrative preparations. With structural works fully complete, the transition to active daily operations remains the immediate priority for the multi-agency teams stationed at the new Suam crossing.

In addition to the main clearance offices, the project incorporates a modern market facility. This market will provide a structured and secure environment for small-scale cross-border traders, particularly women and youth, to sell their goods. This localized commerce is anticipated to thrive as cross-border foot traffic increases in the coming months.
