Jufra council urges support for date producers and review of export rules

The Jufra Municipal Council has called for greater support for date producers and a review of decisions governing agricultural exports, to help protect farmers and boost the competitiveness of Libyan dates in local and international markets, amid expectations of higher output in the 2026 season.

At an emergency meeting held on Wednesday at the council’s headquarters in the town of Hun, officials discussed the impact of current decisions on the local date sector and the potential losses facing farmers, despite the availability of high-quality dates in demand in the market.

The council said a detailed memorandum should be prepared and submitted to the relevant authorities, outlining the effects of these decisions on farmers as the harvest season approaches, as well as reflecting expected production levels for the year.

It also stressed the importance of supporting farmers in tackling agricultural pests and wider challenges, and called for clearer regulations to facilitate date exports while protecting local produce and strengthening its competitiveness.
