Oh, how time flies. It’s been a whopping 40 years since Sigourney Weaver called the xenomorph queen a bitch, but director James Cameron is still very much thinking what could be done with Aliens.
Promoting his first ever concert film, Billie Eilish — Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D), Cameron spoke to Letterboxd about wanting to convert Aliens to 3D, as he did with Titanic and Terminator 2.
“Aliens is a creature of its time,” the director told the outlet.
“We are thinking about converting Aliens [to 3D], because I know now that the tools are so much better than they were for creating depth maps. We’re probably going to wind up converting Aliens, which will be a fun experience,” Cameron said.
“That film seems to be evergreen. People still go back to it a lot. If people remember a movie that I did 38 years ago, I think I’ve already won.”
We can’t say we disagree with that. Aliens remains one of the best sequels of all time and seeing it on the big screen would be a treat. In 3D, though? Cameron is certainly a master of it, as he’s proven with the Avatar films, but Aliens does look pretty darn good in just good, old 2D, too.
As Cameron says, they’re currently just considering it, nothing has been confirmed but if they were to do it, it seems that this year is the ideal time with the film celebrating its 40th anniversary. Cameron might also have the time to focus on a new 3D conversion with reports that the next planned Avatar film is in a bit of a limbo at Disney.
We’ll keep you updated if Ripley and the xenomorph queen’s fight can be seen in 3D any time soon.
