Jamaica’s Foreign Policy Direction and Cuba Relations Questioned

FyaVerse

HAVANA TIMES – Dancehall recording artist FyaVerse has publicly expressed concern over Jamaica’s recent foreign policy decisions, including the reported presence of the USS Nimitz in Kingston Harbour and the future of Jamaica’s long-standing medical cooperation program with Cuba.

Speaking on the issue, FyaVerse said he views Cuba as one of Jamaica’s most important regional partners, citing the contributions of Cuban medical professionals who have served the island for more than 50 years.

“We can never fully repay the Cuban doctors and healthcare workers for the service they have provided to the Jamaican people,” FyaVerse said. “Millions of Jamaicans have benefited from the Cuban medical program over the decades. Lives have been saved, people have received treatment they otherwise may not have had access to, and for that we should remain grateful.”

The program has faced criticism regarding how Cuban medical personnel participating in overseas missions were compensated. Critics, including some human rights advocates and foreign governments, have argued that a substantial portion of the payments for the doctors’ services was retained by the Cuban government rather than being paid directly to the medical professionals themselves.

Cuban authorities have defended the arrangement, stating that participation is voluntary and that the funds help support the country’s healthcare and social programs.

FyaVerse also expressed concern about Jamaica becoming entangled in geopolitical disputes involving larger world powers. According to the entertainer, Jamaica should focus on protecting its sovereignty and maintaining diplomatic relationships that prioritize the interests of the Jamaican people.

“In the relationship between Cuba and the United States, Jamaica should always place its own national interests first,” he said. “The Caribbean region did not ask to become part of international conflicts, and our leaders must ensure that Jamaica remains focused on peace, stability, and regional cooperation.”

The entertainer further argued that Jamaica should carefully balance its relationships with global powers while preserving long-standing partnerships that have historically benefited the country.

FyaVerse’s comments come amid ongoing discussions about international relations, regional security, and the future direction of Jamaica’s foreign policy. His remarks have generated debate among supporters and critics alike, highlighting the differing views that exist regarding Jamaica’s role in an increasingly complex global environment.
