Jamaica eliminated from FIBA World Championships qualifiers

KINGSTON, Jamaica—Jamaica was eliminated from the FIBA World Championships qualifiers Monday, after they were beaten 116-78 by Canada at the TD Coliseum in Hamilton, Ontario, as the home team secured their place in the second round with a perfect record in the FIBA Americas first round, Group B.
Andrew Thelwell scored a game-high 25 points for Jamaica, one of three Jamaicans to score in double digits, as the visitors trailed by as many as 41 points.
Canada, who had seven players scoring in double digits, topped the points table with 12 points, while Puerto Rico, the Bahamas and Jamaica all ended on eight points.
In the other group game on Monday, Puerto Rico beat the Bahamas 115-92 in Nassau.
Canada, who included a handful of top NBA players in their squad, led 32-15 after the first quarter and were up 57-40 at half-time and 89-55 going into the fourth quarter.
Dillon Brooks, who plays for the Phoenix Suns, scored 20 points, including four three-pointers, to lead the Canadians.
Andrew Nembhard of the Indiana Pacers scored 17 points, while former NBA Play-offs MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 16 points.
Kyle Wiltjer scored 13 points, while Leonard Miller and Nickell Alexander-Walker both scored 12 points, and Kyshawn George got 4 for the Canadians.
Marcus McDonald was backed by Thelwell with 19 points, while Chase Audige scored 14 for the Jamaicans.
