Jaishankar meets Liberia parliamentary delegation, reaffirms commitment to deeper Global South partnership
IBSA-funded peer-learning programme brought 15 Liberian lawmakers to India to exchange experiences on development, governance and women’s political empowerment
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday met a parliamentary delegation from Liberia that is visiting India under an IBSA-funded peer-learning programme, highlighting the growing cooperation between the two countries and India’s efforts to strengthen partnerships across the Global South.
Jaishankar shared details of the meeting in a post on X, along with photographs, and said the interaction provided an opportunity to exchange views on development initiatives and India’s experience in implementing welfare and public policy programmes.
“A pleasure to meet a Parliamentary Delegation from Liberia visiting India for the IBSA funded peer-learning programme. Exchanged views on development programmes, sharing the experience of Jan-Dhan Yojana, MUDRA Yojana, SVAnidhi, Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, Jal Jeevan Mission, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Yojana, and Mission Amrit Sarovar.
“Appreciated their interest and reaffirmed our commitment towards deeper Global South partnership,” Jaishankar said.
The programme is being funded by India, Brazil and South Africa through the IBSA Fund and is administered by the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC).
According to a statement from the UN Women India country office, the Liberian delegation comprises 15 members drawn from the country’s Senate, House of Representatives and Secretariat. They are accompanied by staff members from UN Women Liberia and India.
The visit is being organised under a project titled ‘Women Legislators in Liberia: Promoting Voice, Leadership and Gender-Responsive Governance for Sustainable Development’. The initiative is being implemented by UN Women Liberia in partnership with the Women’s Legislative Caucus of Liberia.
The project aims to strengthen the capacity of Liberian lawmakers to promote gender-responsive legislation, improve parliamentary oversight and governance, and create greater opportunities for women’s political and economic empowerment.
The delegation began its nearly week-long visit to India on August 10 as part of the peer-learning programme, which seeks to facilitate the exchange of experiences and best practices between lawmakers from the two countries.
