Iraq signs deal to improve associated gas recovery at West Qurna-1 field

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Iraq’s state-owned Basra Gas Company (BGC) has signed an agreement with Iraq-based AKT Oil Services Company to improve the recovery of associated gas at the West Qurna-1 field.

Under the deal, the locally owned contractor will provide engineering, procurement, and construction services for the low-pressure gas recovery project at one of the field’s gas compression stations, according to a statement released by BGC.

The step underlines BGS’s commitment to growing the gas industry and improving the use of national resources.

AKT frequently collaborates with significant regional operators like BGC and TotalEnergies to complete essential infrastructure projects such as gas processing plants, pipelines, and other important facilities.

With around 20 billion barrels of recoverable reserves, the West Qurna-1 is considered one of the biggest oilfields in the world.

While PetroChina is the primary operator for oil extraction, BGC oversees the infrastructure required to capture the associated gas produced during oil production.

This initiative is consistent with BGC’s objectives of maximizing the capture of associated gas and transforming it into a sustainable economic resource.

The new deal will help reduce gas flaring, minimize emissions, assist environmental protection efforts, and improve the country’s energy security.
