Iraq seizes more than 20 drones in Baghdad

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Iraq’s Federal Intelligence and counter terrorism forces seized more than 20 locally made drones and arrested four people, the Interior Ministry said late Wednesday.

Preemptive operations carried out by the Intelligence Agency and Counter-Terrorism Directorate “in two separate operations resulted in the seizure of more than (20) locally manufactured drones and the arrest of four individuals in possession,” announced the Iraqi ministry of interior.

“These individuals were trading the drones in violation of the regulations and controls established by the relevant authorities. During interrogation, they confessed to possessing these materials for trafficking purposes,” the statement read. 

The seizure comes as Iraqi authorities are taking increased measures to tighten Iraq’s security control amid Iraqi prime minister Ali al-Zaidi’s push for disarmament of militias operating outside of the state security apparatus.

Prime Minister Zaidi, who also serves as the Commander in Chief of the armed forces, visited the Air Defense Command late Wednesday night to review Iraq’s air defense capabilities and operational readiness, his media office said early Thursday.

During the visit, Zaidi framed air defense as the ‘shield of Iraq’s skies’ and the first line of defense for the country’s sovereignty. He also stressed that Iraq must strengthen its armed forces and air defense systems to independently protect its airspace, according to his media office.

The prime minister was briefed on a 2026-2031 plan to develop Iraq’s air defense capabilities, including radar detection and surveillance, weapons systems, and command-and-control capabilities.

The government said the measures draw increasing significance as Iraq prepares for the full withdrawal of the international coalition from the country, scheduled for September 30 under an agreement between Baghdad and Washington.

Zaidi also directed officials to meet the air defense forces’ needs and improve their technological and combat capabilities. He stressed that Iraq would not allow its territory or airspace to be used to launch attacks against neighboring countries.

Zaidi early Thursday affirmed that “Iraq, while working to protect national security and sovereignty, will not allow its territories or airspace to serve as a launchpad for any aggression against neighboring countries.” 

“Iraq’s role bolsters regional security and stability, and that its armed forces are a fortress safeguarding Iraq, its sovereignty, and its national decision,” he said, according to the statement.
