Iraq launches 3,000-cubic-meter gas storage facility in Najaf

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Iraq has inaugurated a gas storage project as part of the Oil Ministry’s efforts to raise storage capacity in line with current operations to boost gas output.

The Iraqi Oil Ministry revealed Monday the start of trial operations at a new gas storage facility in the central Iraqi province of Najaf.

Undersecretary for Gas Affairs Ezzat Saber said in a statement that the new gas depot has a storage capacity of 3,000 cubic meters and is part of efforts to boost production and storage capabilities, the state-run Iraqi News Agency (INA) reported.

The step also reflects the ministry’s efforts to develop the transportation, storage, and distribution systems of liquefied gas, according to Saber.

The Iraqi official explained that the inauguration of the depot at the trial operation stage is certainly an important milestone in improving the capacity of strategic reserves and increasing the flexibility of the supply system.

The initiative will ensure that the requirements for liquefied gas in the central provinces and other cities are adequately met.

The delivery of liquefied gas to the new depot via pipelines, as opposed to tanker trucks, will adhere to safety standards and enhance the stability of supplies.
