Iraq Dismisses Senior Official, Launches Investigation After Confirmed Targeting of Saudi Arabia

Baghdad – Iraqi authorities have dismissed a senior official and opened a comprehensive investigation following findings that confirmed an operation targeting Saudi Arabia, according to official statements released on Saturday.

The Iraqi government announced that the official was removed from his position pending the outcome of ongoing inquiries. 

Authorities said preliminary investigations established evidence linking individuals involved in activities that threatened Saudi interests, prompting swift administrative and legal measures.

Government officials stressed that Iraq remains committed to maintaining strong relations with neighboring countries and rejects any actions that could undermine regional stability or damage diplomatic ties. They emphasized that those found responsible would be held accountable in accordance with Iraqi law.

A government spokesperson stated that specialized security and judicial bodies have been tasked with conducting a transparent investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident, identify those involved, and prevent similar occurrences in the future.

The development comes amid efforts by Baghdad and Riyadh to strengthen bilateral cooperation across political, economic, and security sectors. Iraqi authorities reiterated their commitment to respecting the sovereignty of neighboring states and supporting regional security.

Saudi officials have not yet issued a detailed public response to the investigation, while observers say the case could test Iraq’s determination to confront activities viewed as harmful to its relations with regional partners.
