Iraq corruption case targets $30 million Beverly Hills mansion

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The U.S. Department of Justice has filed a civil forfeiture complaint seeking to seize a Beverly Hills mansion that prosecutors say is linked to Iraqi Kurdish general Mansour Barzani and funded through what they describe as illicit financial gains.

In the filing, authorities allege that Barzani benefited from a scheme involving bribery and inflated fuel supply contracts tied to United States military operations in Iraq and Syria during the campaign against ISIS.

The allegations have not been proven in court.

Prosecutors say a contractor based in Virginia routed the funds and received hundreds of millions of dollars in federal logistics contracts.

According to the complaint, that contracting network was used to move and conceal proceeds tied to the alleged scheme.

The property at the center of the case is described in court documents as a secluded French-style villa in Beverly Hills with amenities that include a theater, a swimming pool, and landscaped gardens.

Authorities allege that the villa was purchased and improved with roughly $30 million dollars in proceeds between 2016 and 2020.

Barzani has not publicly addressed the allegations, and no criminal charges have been filed in connection with the forfeiture action at this time.

The case forms part of a wider investigation into alleged corruption involving defense contracting networks operating in the Kurdistan region, where United States forces relied heavily on local fuel and logistics supply chains during military operations against ISIS.
