WANA (Aug 05) – A source close to the negotiating team has rejected speculation linking the recent lifting of some US sanctions to an understanding between Tehran and Washington, stressing that any decision on reopening the Strait of Hormuz would require the practical implementation of US commitments and separate arrangements.

 

The source said that, contrary to some interpretations and media speculation, the lifting of a limited number of sanctions by the US Treasury Department was related to the Iraqi government’s interactions with Washington and had no connection to the Iran-US memorandum of understanding.

 

The source added that the United States disrupted the normalization of maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz by violating the Islamabad understanding. He said that, in addition to military actions and the imposition of maritime restrictions, Washington’s decision to revoke oil and petrochemical export waivers prevented Iran from accessing its frozen funds.

 

The source close to the negotiating team emphasized that restoring previous conditions would depend on the implementation of Iran’s measures in the Strait of Hormuz and the United States taking real and tangible steps to fulfill its commitments.

 

He further noted that even if an Iran-Oman understanding is finalized, reopening the Strait of Hormuz would still require separate arrangements, including the fulfillment of US obligations.
