TEHRAN, Iran (MNTV) — Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf said that closer ties between Iran and Iraq could contribute to a new regional order based on cooperation, stronger security links and reduced foreign interference.
Qalibaf made the remarks after arriving in Baghdad at the head of an Iranian parliamentary delegation for talks with senior Iraqi officials and political figures.
He said his visit was intended to advance cooperation among countries in the region and support a regional framework in which security and political affairs are managed without intervention by outside powers.
The Iranian speaker called for deeper security cooperation among regional Islamic countries, arguing that stronger economic partnerships should accompany closer security ties. He said Tehran was prepared to contribute to developing such a model.
Qalibaf also highlighted the longstanding cultural and religious connections between Iran and Iraq, describing them as an important foundation for expanding cooperation across political, economic and cultural fields.
During his visit, he is expected to hold meetings with senior Iraqi government officials, members of parliament and prominent representatives from political, economic and cultural circles.
He described the relationship between Iran and Iraq as deeply rooted in their shared history, geographic proximity and common interests, saying the two countries had a common interest in resisting foreign interference and pursuing regional stability.
Qalibaf expressed hope that his meetings in Baghdad would produce concrete progress in strengthening regional security mechanisms, expanding bilateral cooperation and improving conditions for both Iranian and Iraqi populations.
He said the strength of the two countries ultimately rested on their close ties, solidarity and ability to work together in pursuit of shared interests.
