IMF chief commends Senegal’s reforms, commitment to debt treatment

THE Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, has commended Senegal’s economic reforms and commitment to restoring fiscal sustainability.

Georgieva made the remarks in a statement issued after receiving Senegal’s President, Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye, at the IMF headquarters in Washington, D.C.

She said the meeting provided an opportunity to expand discussions on Senegal’s economic policy priorities and progress toward a new IMF-supported programme.

“I expressed my deep appreciation to the President and his team for our strong partnership as we work expeditiously toward a new Fund-supported program,” she said.

According to Georgieva, Senegal has made encouraging progress in strengthening its economy and improving the outlook for investment, jobs and economic growth.

She said discussions with the president reaffirmed their shared commitment to reforms that would support macroeconomic stability and enhance private sector activities.

The IMF managing director said such reforms were also expected to deliver tangible social and economic benefits to the Senegalese people.

She particularly commended the Senegalese authorities’ intention to pursue a debt treatment and determination to swiftly restore fiscal sustainability.

Georgieva said the IMF remained fully committed to supporting Senegal’s reform efforts as the country pursued its development ambitions.

“I am confident that, by working together, we can deliver lasting results for the people of Senegal,” she said.
