Ian Prior is back at fly-half for Zimbabwe as the Sables open their World Rugby Nations Cup campaign against Tonga in Denver on Saturday.
The Australia-based playmaker has been named in Pieter Benade’s starting XV for the Pool A v Pool B clash at DICK’s Sporting Goods Park, according to Ultimate Rugby’s team-news report. It is his first Sables appearance since the 2025 Rugby Africa Cup final win over Namibia, when Zimbabwe sealed a long-awaited route back to the Rugby World Cup.
Prior gives Zimbabwe control point
The significance is obvious. Prior brings Super Rugby experience, goal-kicking authority and a calmer tactical hand to a match that doubles as a useful early read on the 2027 World Cup pool picture.
World Rugby’s schedule confirms Tonga v Zimbabwe kicks off at 16:15 local time, 23:15 BST, in Denver. The governing body’s tournament guide places Zimbabwe in the Europe, Asia and Africa pool, with Tonga among the Americas and Pacific opponents.
The selection also widens the stakes beyond one opening-weekend result. Tonga and Zimbabwe have both been drawn in Rugby World Cup 2027 Pool F with England and Wales, a point flagged by World Rugby’s launch preview.
For Zimbabwe, this is the next stage after qualification emotion. ReadRugbyUnion has already covered how the new calendar gives emerging nations a clearer runway in its Nations Championship opening-weekend piece. Prior’s return now gives that runway a proven on-field organiser.
