I pursued modelling as a means to ‘escape’ marriage

Nineteen-year-old aspiring South Sudanese model Khloe Nyanda says modelling has become more than a career path for many young women in her country, describing it as an opportunity to pursue their dreams and, for some, avoid early marriage.

Speaking to BBC host Nkechi Ogbonna on Focus on Africa, Nyanda revealed that she does not want to get married and sees modelling as the path she wants to follow.

“For some of us, this is where we can escape marriage. Speaking for myself, I don’t want to get married, so that’s why I chose modelling,” she said.

Nyanda attributed the growing global demand for South Sudanese models to their distinctive features.

“We have good skin, we are very unique, and we also have the height. Big brands are choosing South Sudanese girls,” she explained.

The aspiring model also credited international stars such as Anok Yai, Adut Akech and Alek Wek for inspiring a new generation of young South Sudanese women to pursue modelling.

“Without them, I wouldn’t be a model today. Years ago, we didn’t have many South Sudanese girls in the industry. When they came along, we realised modelling was something good, and I asked myself, ‘Why can’t I be like them?’” she said.

Despite the increasing global recognition of South Sudanese models, Nyanda said many aspiring models still face resistance from their families, as some parents fear their daughters may never return home after travelling abroad for work.

She expressed hope that attitudes would change, saying she dreams of seeing South Sudan dominate the global modelling industry.

“I want South Sudan to dominate the world. I hope our parents will let their daughters go and fulfil their dreams,” she added.
