What a month it’s been. All the ecstacy and heartbreak, joy and anger has now brought us to the quarterfinal stage of the 2026 World Cup as we draw closer and closer to the final in ten days’ time.
The next round starts with a doozy of a matchup, a rematch of the 2022 semifinals as France meets Morocco once again, this time for a chance for either to return to the final four. Les Bleus have won every match in the tournament up to this point, while the Atlas Lions have been able to fend off every challenge thrown their way, unbeaten even against sides like Brazil and the Netherlands.
Who will be left standing after today’s solitary match?
France vs. Morocco, 4 p.m ET, Boston | Winner faces Spain/Belgium winner July 14 in Dallas
How France got to the Quarterfinal
It’s been quite the tournament so far for France. The back to back finalists came in as one of the World Cup’s heavyweights and have completely lived up to the billing. The French squad won by multiple goals in every match before running up against fiesty underdogs Paraguay in the Round of 16.
France did what they needed to do, though, and Kylian Mbappe’s goal from the penalty spot provided the difference to survive and advance.
How Morocco got to the Quarterfinal
While not in the very highest echelon of contenders, it’s still no surprise to see Morocco here in the quarterfinals as one of Africa’s top sides returns to the last 8. A second place finish in Group C thanks to goal differential gave Morocco a matchup with the Netherlands in the Round of 32, where a stoppage time goal and shootout victory gave the Atlas Lions a thrilling victory. A comfortable 3-0 result to knock out co-hosts Canada gives them good form heading into their toughest opponent yet.
