A three-year-old girl, Afnan, has been killed by a rainstorm in Mokwa town, the headquarters of Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State.
Sources told Daily Trust that the room where the little girl was sleeping alongside her mother and five siblings collapsed on them following a heavy rainstorm that occurred around 12am on Monday.
A resident, Mr Galadima Audu, told Daily Trust that the mother and her five other children sustained severe injuries and are currently receiving treatment at a hospital.
“The incident happened around 12am on Monday. We got to the hospital around 1am. There were seven people in the room, including the mother.
“The mother’s legs were broken. We had to remove broken blocks from their bodies. The other children were also injured and are currently at the hospital.
“The girl who died was rushed to the hospital alive but died minutes later. The father is away in Kiama, Kwara State, where he is doing menial jobs,” he said.
Galadima listed the affected areas as Tifi-Maza, Shaba-Lile, Eti-Sheshi, Tako-Wangwa, Kpege, and Efu-Goro.
The Council Chairman, Jibrin Abdullahi Muregi, who confirmed the incident in a telephone interview, said the extent of the damage was yet to be fully assessed.
He added that the rainstorm destroyed homes and properties worth millions of naira, leaving many families displaced.
