Houthi Official’s Remarks on Hunger Spark Outrage in Yemen

Sana’a — Statements made by Mohammed Maftah, acting head of the unrecognized Houthi government, have triggered widespread anger and criticism across Yemen after he commented on the dire living conditions facing millions of citizens.

In a video broadcast by Houthi-affiliated media, Maftah urged hungry Yemenis to cut spending on internet services and seek work opportunities, saying they should “put coin over coin, even if the work is without pay.”

He claimed to be monitoring appeals posted by citizens on social media about hunger and worsening economic hardship, suggesting that people should prioritize basic needs over other expenses.

The remarks provoked a wave of backlash from activists and ordinary Yemenis, who accused the official of dismissing the suffering of the population amid one of the world’s worst humanitarian and economic crises.

Videos circulated online showed artists, citizens, and even former fighters and wounded members of the group speaking about their harsh living conditions. Yemeni artist Ali al-Kawkabani said in a widely shared clip that the suffering of citizens has reached unprecedented levels, criticizing attempts to downplay the humanitarian catastrophe.

A former wounded fighter revealed he lives in a small room with no source of income, highlighting the depth of the crisis. Media reports also pointed to declining food supplies for fighters on some frontlines, amid accusations that Houthi leaders are monopolizing financial resources and allocations.

The controversy underscores growing frustration among Yemenis as hunger and poverty continue to spread, with millions struggling to survive in the absence of salaries, collapsing services, and shrinking humanitarian aid.
