Houston Dynamo sign Bafana striker Lyle Foster on loan from Burnley

Lyle Foster has begun a new chapter in his career in Major League Soccer, with the Bafana Bafana striker joining Houston Dynamo on loan from Burnley.

The move, confirmed on Thursday, will keep Foster in Texas until the end of June 2027, with Houston holding an option to make the transfer permanent.

Foster’s arrival also strengthens the growing South African presence in the MLS, where he will be reunited with two of the country’s promising young internationals, Puso Dithejane and Mbekezeli Mbokazi.

Dithejane and Mbokazi are both with Chicago Fire, having made the move to the United States in 2026 under the MLS Under-22 Initiative.

For Foster, however, the switch represents more than another destination abroad.

The 26-year-old needed a fresh start after finding himself down the pecking order at Burnley following their relegation from the Premier League.

He made 26 Premier League appearances last season, scoring three goals and providing two assists, but was not part of Burnley’s plans at the start of their return to the Championship.

Houston have moved to give him another opportunity to revive his club career.

Dynamo president of soccer Pat Onstad highlighted Foster’s ability to threaten space behind defences, link play and contribute defensively through his work rate.

The striker arrives with considerable experience, having spent the past four seasons at Burnley and made 89 league appearances for the club across the Premier League and Championship.

He helped Burnley secure promotion to the Premier League twice and also established himself as an important member of the Bafana Bafana squad.

Foster was part of South Africa’s 2026 World Cup campaign, starting the opening match against Mexico as Bafana progressed to the knockout stage for the first time in their history.

His move to Houston could therefore have significance beyond his club career, particularly with South Africa’s new era under coach Pitso Mosimane getting underway.

The presence of Dithejane and Mbokazi should also provide Foster with familiar faces as he adapts to life in the United States.

Dithejane has already made his mark in MLS, scoring his first league goal against Inter Miami and being named Chicago Fire’s Player of the Month for July-August.

Mbokazi, meanwhile, has established himself in Chicago’s defensive ranks after making the move from Orlando Pirates.

The three players now form part of an expanding South African contingent in the American top flight.

For Foster, the priority will be to turn the move into regular football and rediscover the form that made him one of Bafana’s leading attacking options.

Houston, who are currently second in the Western Conference, will hope his Premier League experience and international pedigree can strengthen their push for a strong finish to the season.
