Haftar backs outcomes of Libya’s 4+4 group meetings

Khalifa Haftar has expressed his support for the outcomes of Libya’s “4+4” small convening group, which were signed on Sunday at the headquarters of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) in Tripoli by representatives of the Government of National Unity (GNU) and Haftar’s forces.

Haftar also reaffirmed his “commitment to working toward the unification of the Libyan state and defending the demands of the Libyan people to end the state of chaos and division.”

In a statement published by the command of his forces on its media platforms, Haftar welcomed the signing of the final agreement of the 4+4 small group under the auspices of UNSMIL, following months of discussions and what the statement described as constructive talks in which the General Command had participated in an effort to end the country’s political deadlock.

Haftar said that “the signing by the Libyan parties of the outcomes of the small meeting represents progress in addressing issues that have remained unresolved for years and have obstructed the will of Libyans to move toward holding presidential and parliamentary elections.”

Haftar praised the role of the parties involved in the small meeting and welcomed the local and international support for the Libyan parties’ consensus aimed at overcoming obstacles standing in the way of changing the country’s current state of division.

Before Haftar’s statement, his deputy Saddam Haftar, the head of the parallel government Osama Hammad, and GNU Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah had all welcomed the signing of the agreement, as had UNSMIL and the European Union Delegation to Libya.
