Guinea Reaffirms Support for Morocco’s Sovereignty Over Western Sahara

Agadir – Guinea has reaffirmed its firm and consistent support for Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara, backing autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty as the sole solution to the regional dispute.

The position was reiterated today during the eighth session of the Morocco-Guinea Joint Cooperation Commission in Conakry, co-chaired by Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and his Guinean counterpart, Morissanda Kouyaté.

In his opening remarks, Kouyaté reiterated Guinea’s “steadfast and unwavering support for the Moroccanness of the Sahara and for Morocco’s sovereignty over this part of its territory.”

The Guinean minister also said his country supports “autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty as the sole solution to this dispute,” in line with Morocco’s proposal before the United Nations Security Council.

For his part, Bourita expressed the Moroccan government’s gratitude for Guinea’s “unconditional support,” citing the West African country’s positions in regional and international forums, as well as the decision to establish a consulate in Dakhla. 

The two ministers also used the joint commission to review bilateral cooperation and discuss ways to strengthen relations between Morocco and Guinea across various sectors.

Guinea’s reaffirmation comes amid continued diplomatic exchanges between Morocco and African partners over the Sahara case.

In June, Guinea-Bissau also renewed its support for Morocco’s territorial integrity, including the Western Sahara, following talks in Rabat between Guinea-Bissau’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Communities Fatumata Jau and Bourita.

Jau described Guinea-Bissau’s position as firm and unchanged and reaffirmed her country’s support for Morocco’s sovereignty over its territory.
