Glenrose Xaba and Carina Swiegers Win Region 5 Marathon Titles

Glenrose Xaba of Boxer AC won the women’s 10km at the Region 5 Marathon in 33:48, while Namibia’s Lavinia Haitope claimed the 21km in 1:14:41 and Carina Swiegers, also of Boxer AC, took the 5km in 17:19 at the Union Buildings in Pretoria on Sunday, 1 November 2026.

The race, hosted by Athletics South Africa in partnership with the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 and the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC), offered World Athletics ranking points ahead of the 2027 World Athletics Road Running Championships.

Xaba won by more than a minute from Lesotho’s Agnes Tjoka of Nedbank Running Club Lesotho, who ran 35:12 to finish second overall while competing in the 40 to 49 age category. Zanele Maisa was third in 35:34.

Xaba, who described the conditions as very hot, said she was glad to finish first and that she had run with the leading bunch, including 21km runner Irvette van Zyl, until the 10km and 21km fields separated.

“I said that I would come just to my tempo run. I’m glad that I was to run a good time also. And the course is very challenging. It’s starting with the hills, it’s finishing with the hills.”
