Gianluca Busio injured for Venezia, dealing blow to USMNT hopes

Venezia midfielder Gianluca Busio was substituted with an injury just before halftime against Fiorentina in a Serie A match on Friday, Sept. 11.

Busio appeared to suffer a hamstring injury and was unable to put any weight on his right leg as he was helped off the field by two staff members.

The Venezia captain had assisted the game’s opening goal, laying off to Akor Adams after a driving run through midfield. But Franco Mastantuono struck back with a pair of goals to make it 2-1 for the visitors before halftime.

Mastantuono would complete his hat trick in the second half as Fiorentina secured a 4-2 win, consigning Venezia to its fourth straight loss to begin the season.

The injury is a blow for Venezia and Busio, who was named captain for the club ahead of its return to the top flight after winning Serie B last season.

The 24-year-old has been with Venezia since 2021, with the club bouncing back and forth between Serie A and Serie B since then.

Busio’s injury looks likely to knock him out of contention for the U.S. men’s national team’s four upcoming friendlies, starting with a match against Peru on Sept. 26.

Busio has 17 caps for the USMNT, most recently playing in November 2024.
