GE Vernova, Eneva Start 295 MW Brazil Gas Plant


  • Azulão I will provide 295 MW of firm, dispatchable capacity to Brazil’s National Interconnected System under a 15-year contract.
  • The plant is designed to support grid stability as wind and solar take a larger share of Brazil’s power mix.

Eneva and GE Vernova have started commercial operations at the 295 MW Azulão I thermal power plant in Brazil’s Amazonas state.

The plant is located in Silves, about 330 kilometres from Manaus. It is contracted to supply firm capacity to Brazil’s National Interconnected System, or SIN, for 15 years.

Azulão I is the first operating asset within Eneva’s broader Azulão Complex. The development also includes the planned Azulão II power plant.

For Brazil, the project adds dispatchable generation at a time when the electricity system is absorbing larger volumes of variable renewable power.

Gas capacity targets grid reliability

Azulão I is powered by GE Vernova’s 7HA.02 gas turbine and H65 generator. The turbine is designed to respond quickly to changes in electricity demand.

That flexibility is becoming more important as Brazil expands its wind and solar capacity.

Brazil’s Ten-Year Energy Expansion Plan, PDE 2035, projects renewables will account for more than 85% of national electricity generation by 2035. Wind and solar are expected to play a growing role.

Their variability, however, creates a greater requirement for flexible capacity that can respond when renewable generation falls.

Gas-fired assets remain part of that balancing strategy. They can provide firm capacity during periods of lower wind or solar production, while supporting system reliability during demand peaks.

Reservoir-to-Wire model tackles infrastructure constraints

The project uses Eneva’s Reservoir-to-Wire model, which generates electricity close to the source of natural gas production.

That approach can reduce the need to transport gas over long distances before it reaches a power station. In remote regions, it can also help overcome infrastructure constraints that complicate energy development.

Connecting Azulão I to Brazil’s transmission network required additional engineering.

The plant feeds into the Tucuruí-Macapá-Manaus corridor, a high-voltage transmission route stretching roughly 1,850 kilometres.

Eneva and GE Vernova deployed a custom Sub Synchronous Resonance blocking filter and a torsional stress relay solution. The systems are designed to protect equipment and maintain stable operation across the transmission network.

GE Vernova also secured a 15-year service agreement covering the plant.

Flexible power enters Brazil’s transition debate

The project places gas-fired generation squarely within Brazil’s wider energy transition.

For policymakers and electricity market participants, the challenge is increasingly about balancing two objectives. Brazil wants to expand renewable generation while retaining enough dependable capacity to maintain grid security.

For investors, that creates demand for assets that can respond quickly to changing power conditions. It also raises questions over how long gas capacity will remain economically competitive as storage, transmission and other flexibility technologies develop.

GE Vernova has operated in Brazil for more than a century and employs around 5,000 people locally. Its installed equipment base contributes to approximately 40% of the country’s electricity generation.

As Brazil moves toward a power system dominated by renewables, Azulão I illustrates the parallel investment challenge facing fast-growing electricity markets. Clean generation must expand, but grids also require dependable capacity, transmission resilience and increasingly sophisticated balancing technologies to keep power systems stable.
