Gateway to Elation launches project for digital inclusion in Zimbabwe

Gateway to Elation launched the ‘Accessible Digital Civic Participation for Blind Communities’ project in Zimbabwe to support the participation of blind and visually impaired people in the country’s increasingly digital public and civic spaces. The three-month initiative focuses on improving access to digital technologies and opportunities for civic participation.

The project is based on the organisation’s wider work in computer literacy, internet use, accessible technology, communication skills, and community participation for blind people. Gateway to Elation says it aims to equip blind people with skills that can help them access information, become more independent, and participate more fully in society.

At the project launch, founder Robert Malunda called for greater consideration of accessibility when government institutions and businesses develop digital platforms and websites. The project also highlights the potential of digital technologies to support access to information, economic opportunities, and civic participation for people with visual impairments.

Why does it matter?

As public information, services, and civic participation increasingly move online, inaccessible digital platforms can create new barriers for people with disabilities. Ensuring that websites, applications, and other digital services can be used by people with visual impairments is therefore an important part of inclusive digital development.

Improving digital accessibility can also strengthen participation by enabling people with visual impairments to use online services more independently and take part in economic and civic life.
