Gang Attack Kills at Least 47 in Haiti, Prompting Anger from Residents

A brutal gang attack left at least 47 people dead, 22 injured and an unknown number missing near Haiti’s capital on Sunday, part of escalating violence as armed groups expand their control into communities surrounding Port-au-Prince.

The attack took place in Kenscoff, a hillside neighborhood southeast of Port-au-Prince that has faced repeated gang violence in recent months. The violence has forced thousands of residents from their homes, adding to Haiti’s years-long security crisis.

In what Kenscoff Mayor Massillon Jean has described as a “night of terror,” armed groups raided the mountainous town, setting fire to homes and killing at least 47 residents, some execution-style.

The suspected gang behind Sunday’s raid is the Viv Ansanm coalition, which the United States has designated as a foreign terrorist organization.
