The Gambia’s telecommunications sector is set for a major transformation following the signing of a landmark Share Investment and Network Modernisation Agreement between YCELL Company Limited and The Gambia Telecommunications Company Limited (GAMTEL).
Under the agreement, YCELL will acquire an 80 percent stake in GAMCEL and invest GMD6.1 billion to modernise the company’s telecommunications infrastructure, expand connectivity and strengthen the country’s digital economy.
The investment will focus on upgrading GAMCEL’s network capacity through the nationwide deployment of 4G/LTE and 5G radio access networks, modernisation of core network systems and the introduction of advanced digital platforms, including next-generation Operational Support Systems (OSS), Business Support Systems (BSS), Customer Relationship Management (CRM) solutions and convergent billing systems.
The programme will also support the construction of a new corporate headquarters for GAMCEL, installation of hybrid power solutions at telecommunications tower sites, and the deployment of integrated revenue assurance and fraud management systems.
In addition to infrastructure upgrades, the partnership includes institutional capacity building, strategic branding and marketing initiatives aimed at improving GAMCEL’s competitiveness and expanding its market share. An independent technical expert will conduct a comprehensive network assessment to guide the implementation process.
Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Hon. Lamin Jabbi, described the agreement as a significant milestone in The Gambia’s digital transformation journey.
The minister said the partnership followed months of negotiations designed to secure a sustainable future for GAMCEL while protecting the long-term interests of the country.
Representatives of YCELL expressed appreciation for the confidence placed in the company and pledged to deliver the transformation programme through sustained investment, strong management and transparent corporate governance.
GAMTEL representative Kebba Kabba Bojang described the agreement as a turning point for the company, expressing confidence that renewed investment and leadership would help GAMCEL regain its position as a leading telecommunications provider.
Once fully implemented, the GMD6.1 billion investment is expected to improve network reliability, expand broadband access, enhance customer experience and create new opportunities for innovation and economic growth across The Gambia.
Hon. Lamin Jabbi, Minister of Communications and Digital Economy
