Funding shortage threatens to cut food aid to 650,000 in South Sudan

Geneva, Aug. 14 (SANA) The United Nations on Friday warned that more than 650,000 people in South Sudan are at risk of losing food assistance within weeks due to a severe funding shortfall, according to data from the World Food Programme and UNHCR.

South Sudan is facing one of the world’s worst hunger crises, with more than 7.8 million people—over half the population—experiencing acute food insecurity, and 2.2 million children suffering from acute malnutrition, the agencies said.

The last food distributions to the most vulnerable refugees in South Sudan—240,000 of the 650,000 refugees—will take place in September unless new funding is secured urgently, according to WFP data published on its official website.

South Sudan continues to face escalating security and humanitarian challenges amid ongoing tensions and clashes between government forces and opposition groups, with international calls for enhanced stability and unimpeded humanitarian access.
