Paris – French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot announced Sunday that France has requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council amid escalating Israeli military operations in Lebanon.
Barrot told reporters that there is no justification for extending Israel’s military actions and deepening occupation in Lebanese territory. He warned that Israel is making a grave mistake by escalating its operations in violation of its commitments to the Lebanon ceasefire, which was reached on April 17, and in contradiction of international law.
Israeli forces announced yesterday that they had expanded their ground operations to additional areas north of the Litani River. This comes amid intensified airstrikes and shelling, as international warnings grow about the humanitarian consequences for civilians and Lebanon’s infrastructure.
