Four Libyan nationals abducted in Chad have been freed and returned home, according to the defence ministry under the Government of National Unity.
The ministry said the men were among six civilians from Ajdabiya who were travelling with four trucks loaded with goods en route to Chad when they were intercepted by an armed criminal group. The group abducted them and seized the vehicles, demanding a ransom of about 900,000 Libyan dinars.
Two of the hostages were killed during their captivity, the ministry said. It added that Libyan authorities, working with the Libyan embassy in Chad and the relevant Chadian authorities, were able to locate the captives and carry out a rescue operation.
The four survivors were flown back to Libya on a special aircraft and arrived at Tripoli International Airport after the necessary procedures were completed and their safety inside Chadian territory was secured, the ministry said.
