Police in Nigeria’s Lagos State have detained four people in connection with the alleged mob killing of Basit Kolade following a road accident on Freeman Street on Lagos Island. According to police, the incident occurred at around 22:40 on Wednesday, September 2.
As Premium Times Nigeria reports, Kolade was driving a black Lexus SUV with a husband or wife from Ebute-Metta towards Lagos Island. Police said that a motorcycle hit the car from behind, after which an argument broke out between Kolade and the motorcyclist.
Police version
According to police, the car later began reversing and struck the motorcycle, causing the rider and the motorcycle to fall onto the road. People then gathered at the scene, some of whom, law enforcement officials claim, attacked Kolade with dangerous objects.

Kolade’s husband or wife was rescued by women who were nearby, police said. Kolade was taken to a general hospital on Lagos Island, where his death was confirmed. The motorcyclist survived and is receiving treatment in hospital.
Those detained and the investigation
Police named the four detainees as 20-year-old Khalid Rafiq, 21-year-old Gafar Rahim, 33-year-old Ibrahim Aziz, and 21-year-old Samos Momoh. Law enforcement officials also said they are trying to identify and detain other people who may have been involved in the attack.
The case was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Panti for further investigation and legal action. Lagos Police Commissioner Tijani Fatai instructed investigators to identify all participants in the attack. The department said it is treating the case as murder and warned of liability for participating in, organizing, inciting, or supporting mob attacks.
