The story

Bafana Bafana frontman Lyle Foster has been embracing his new surroundings in Houston, teaming up with Dynamo teammate Lawrence Ennali to dive into the city’s famed Texas BBQ food culture.

From smoked brisket and ribs to burgers, sandwiches and delicious sides, Foster and his German teammate were treated to a delectable BBQ feast at The Pit Room, a proudly Houstonian restaurant with locations in Montrose and Memorial.

There, the two forwards learned about the art of smoking meat and what makes Texas BBQ so special.

The duo got stuck into action in the kitchen, going from plating meals to cutting large portions of meat and connecting with the chefs. When tucking into the various platters on the menu, Foster got stuck into the juicy ribs and tender brisket, calling the latter the best on the menu.

“For me, just being in there, like, even having a chance to work in there for a second, you get the feel of the love that goes into it,” noted Foster, who gave plenty of credit to the chefs for making his experience worthwhile.

“16 hours cooking meat, they [chefs] on there on the job, and the customers. [The chefs] take so much pride in what they do, and it speaks volumes, and it’s maybe why this cuisine is as popular as it is,” said Foster.

The 26-year-old, who joined Houston Dynamo on loan from Burnley in September and marked his arrival with a goal in just his second appearance, has been included in Pitso Mosimane’s final squad for Bafana Bafana’s 2027 AFCON qualifying double-header against Benni McCarthy’s Kenya. South Africa will host Kenya at Orlando Amstel Arena on 13 November before travelling for the reverse fixture four days later.

Foster will be hoping to rediscover the goalscoring form that helped Bafana during the 2025 AFCON and played a key role in securing the country’s first FIFA World Cup appearance since 2010.
