Johnson is no stranger to Egyptian football after he spent one season as Pitso Mosimane’s assistant coach at Al Ahly, winning the CAF Champions League together.
The Johannesburg-born coach has been without a club for two years now after leaving Kaizer Chiefs at the end of the 2023/24 campaign.
Pyramids Links
In an interview with the Egyptian publication MBC Masr, the 67-year-old explained that he was beaming with pride at being linked with the Sky Blues, but no contact has been made, Mes7at reported.
“I am deeply honoured to know that my name has been brought forward to coach a club of Pyramids’ stature, and I am grateful for this trust. However, as of right now, I have not been officially contacted by any club official,” the South African explained.
The ex-AmaZulu boss was questioned about Mosimane’s coaching future, but admitted he was the only one who could speak to it.
World Cup Assessment
Johnson discussed Africa’s World Cup performances and listed Egypt as Africa’s leading side for the tournament.
“Egypt has played at an excellent level so far. I believe they have the potential to go very deep in the tournament and perhaps become the dark horse of this World Cup,” he said, praising Mohamed Salah’s influence as a leader and game changer for the Pharaohs.
Johnson discussed Bafana Bafana’s World Cup campaign, which ended at the Round of 32 against Canada, and said it was the nature of the game that South Africa had to lose.
