Nigerian forward Ibrahim Sunusi has officially left Major League Soccer side CF Montréal after both parties agreed to terminate his contract by mutual consent.
The 23-year-old striker, whose deal was due to expire at the end of the 2026 season with an option for an additional year, departs the Canadian club after five years to pursue a new chapter in his career.
Sunusi’s time in Montréal was hampered in recent seasons by recurring injury setbacks, particularly a persistent back problem that limited his training and kept him out of regular first-team action for much of the campaign.
Despite the challenges, the former Nigeria Premier Football League star showed his quality during the 2024 season, scoring six goals in all competitions before injuries interrupted his progress.
Increased competition for places and tactical changes also restricted his opportunities in the team.
Before moving to North America, Sunusi established himself as one of the NPFL’s most prolific strikers. He finished as the league’s joint-top scorer in the 2019 season while at Nasarawa United, earning the Golden Boot.
On the international stage, Sunusi represented Nigeria at U-23 level before breaking into the senior national team. He announced himself with a goal on his Super Eagles debut against Togo during the 2020 African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers.
Now a free agent, the Nigerian striker will be hoping for a fresh start as he seeks to revive his career after an injury-plagued spell in Major League Soccer.
