Former head of Iraq’s anti-corruption committee sentenced to seven years in prison

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Iraq’s Federal Commission of Integrity has revealed that the Central Anti-Corruption Criminal Court sentenced former lawmaker Talal al-Zubaie to seven years in prison on charges of illicit gains.

The verdict represents an important step in the country’s massive “Operation Dawn” campaign against corruption.

The integrity commission said in a statement that the value of al-Zubaie’s illicit gains and inflated wealth reached approximately 35 billion Iraqi dinars (about $26.5 million).

The sentence also obligates al-Zubaie to pay approximately 70 billion Iraqi dinars (nearly $53.2 million), covering the embezzled funds and an equivalent financial fine.

The decision highlights a notable change in al-Zubaidi’s political career, as he was for years one of the most prominent parliamentary members linked with Iraq’s battle against corruption.

Al-Zubaie’s name grew in popularity, notably when he led the parliamentary integrity committee from 2014 to 2018, making him one of the most prominent legislators in the fight against corruption.

The Iraqi legislator was arrested at his residence in the al-Harithiya area in western Baghdad during “Operation Dawn,” which was carried out by a joint team of the Counter-Terrorism Service (CTS) under court supervision.

Operation Dawn represents Iraq’s largest-ever anti-corruption crackdown, launched to dismantle deep-rooted embezzlement, bribery, and illicit gain networks.
