Five suspected goat thieves detained in Leer County
BENTIU – Authorities in Leer County of South Sudan’s Unity State have detained five individuals suspected of stealing and illegally slaughtering goats belonging to community members in the Juong area, local police said.
Speaking to Sudans Post, Leer County Police Director General Brig. Gen. Samuel Machul Nguen confirmed the arrests, saying the suspects were apprehended during an operation on Thursday and are currently being held as investigations continue.
According to Machul, the suspects were found in possession of cooking equipment, the heads of several slaughtered goats, and one live goat believed to have been stolen from residents.
The surviving goat was recovered and returned to its rightful owner, while authorities work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
“The five suspects are under detention and investigation after they were found with cooking equipment, heads of slaughtered goats, and one live goat, which was returned to its rightful owner,” Machul said.
He described the suspects as part of a group accused of destroying community property and engaging in criminal activities that have affected residents in the Juong blocks.
Machul noted that similar incidents involving the theft and slaughter of livestock have been reported in the area, raising concerns among community members who rely heavily on livestock for their livelihoods.
He said police are committed to ensuring accountability and restoring confidence among residents by pursuing a thorough investigation into the case.
The police chief further stated that the suspects will be presented before a competent court once investigations are completed.
“The group is accused of destroying community property, especially in the Juong blocks. Once investigations are completed, they will be taken to court,” he added.
Livestock theft remains a recurring challenge in parts of Unity State, where cattle, goats, and other animals serve as important economic assets for many families. Local authorities say efforts are ongoing to curb such crimes and strengthen security in affected communities.
