The Malian government forces, in collaboration with their Russian allies, utilized Shahed-136-type loitering munitions in northern Mali during July 2026. This event marks the inaugural verified deployment of these long-range strike drones within the context of the Sahel conflict.
Open-source investigators at Bellingcat, in cooperation with Jeune Afrique, geolocated footage of two separate strikes conducted five days apart. The initial attack occurred in Inafarak, north of Kidal, on July 12. The subsequent strike targeted Talhandak, a village roughly 3 km from the Algerian border, on July 17. In the Inafarak incident, a drone struck a commercial facility, damaging buildings and several fuel storage tanks. Analysts compared satellite imagery captured before and after the attack, identifying several structures from 2024 that had been demolished by July 15, corroborating the damage observed in the footage. Five days later, the Talhandak strike destroyed a lorry transporting oil containers and caused the death of a civilian male. Bellingcat characterized these incidents as some of the clearest open-source evidence to date indicating that Shahed-type systems are now operational on an African battlefield.
Nevertheless, experts consulted by Bellingcat suggest that the weapons were likely manufactured in Russia, citing the presence of the Kremlin-linked Africa Corps in Mali and the broader pattern of Russian military support to the Malian government. Drone specialist Leo Jarry of Tungsten Strategies stated that if the drones are Russian-made, they “represent a visible demonstration of Russian support” for Mali’s military efforts.
The Shahed-136 is a one-way attack drone, classified as a loitering munition, designed to fly towards a predetermined target and detonate upon impact. Designed by Iran’s Shahed Aviation Industries, Russia is currently manufacturing its version at the Alabuga plant in Tatarstan under a technology-transfer agreement with Tehran, marketed under various names including Geran-2. Due to the inability to confirm the precise variant deployed in Mali from the available footage, references are made to “Shahed-type” drones rather than a specific model. The system gained notoriety in Russia’s military engagement in Ukraine, where it has been extensively employed against Kyiv and other cities, predominantly targeting energy infrastructure. The drone can carry a high-explosive warhead weighing approximately 50-90 kg and boasts a claimed range exceeding 2,000 km, though actual figures depend on payload and flight profile. It launches from a simple rail launcher with a rocket-assisted booster, requiring no runway, and can be deployed from a truck bed, making it well-suited to Mali’s desert environment, where paved airfields are scarce and ground forces face logistical challenges over long distances.
The cost-effectiveness of the drone, relative to manned aircraft or precision-guided missiles, contributes significantly to its appeal. It navigates to its target using civilian GPS or GLONASS satellite navigation combined with inertial guidance, offering a lower-cost alternative to laser- or radar-guided munitions used in more sophisticated systems. While less accurate than armed unmanned aircraft such as Turkey’s Bayraktar TB2 or Akıncı, which Mali already operates, the drone’s affordability allows for larger deployment, making it suitable for attacking fixed targets such as vehicles, fuel depots, and militant encampments rather than fast-moving or heavily fortified targets.
This deployment addresses a gap in Mali’s aerial capabilities. Following the recent loss of several military aircraft, such as the Mi-24P attack helicopters, transport helicopters, the Bayraktar Akıncı, and Su-25 jets, the availability of a low-cost, expendable strike platform provides Mali and its Russian allies with an effective means to target insurgent-held areas without risking valuable manned aircraft or ground troops.
In May 2026, Ukrainian authorities reported the downing of a Russian-produced Shahed-derivative drone in Mali, marking the first documented appearance of such systems in the Sahel region. Examination of wreckage revealed mixed civilian and military-grade electronics, consistent with patterns observed in drones used against Ukraine. However, the strikes at Talhandak and Inafarak equip Mali’s military and its Russian partners with a strategic tool: an economical and expendable method to strike fixed targets at considerable distances from any accessible roads, particularly in regions previously deemed secure from conventional aerial attack.
As Mali and Russia potentially expand their program and insurgent groups adapt their movement and logistical strategies, further documentation of strikes in the coming months will elucidate the evolving operational landscape.
