FIFA changes the sanctions against Argentina’s players after the World Cup final
The Argentine Football Association (AFA) announced that FIFA modified the sanction against its national team players for the incidents that occurred in the 2026 World Cup final against Spain, following a request for the suspended matches to be counted in friendlies and official Conmebol matches, according to a statement published this Thursday.
The Argentine Football Association sent a formal request to FIFA so that the sanctions imposed on its footballers during the 2026 World Cup final and on the association itself, can be served in Class “A” friendly matches and/or official matches, whichever comes first,” explained the top football authority in the South American country, which added that the request “has been approved.

FIFA handed down a suspension of ten matches to Leandro Paredes, seven to Nahuel Molina, one to Thiago Almada and three to member of the coaching staff Roberto Ayala, over the incidents on the field after last July’s final in which Spain defeated Argentina 1-0.
In its statement this Thursday, the AFA stressed that it will persist with the appeal of the sanctions, which also included financial fines and crowd restrictions for home matches.
‘“The Argentine Football Association, in defense of its rights and those of its footballers, is awaiting the grounds for the decisions in order to file the corresponding appeals before FIFA’s Appeals Committee, with CAS potentially as the final instance,” the AFA statement concluded.’
‘The AFA’s legal advisor, Andrés Paton Urich, said last Friday in an interview with DSports radio: “We consider the sanctions to be excessive and will seek to have them reduced”.’
The Argentine entity was punished with a fine of $321,000 pursuant to various articles of the FIFA Disciplinary Code for incidents in the team’s matches against Cape Verde, Egypt, Switzerland, England and Spain during the World Cup, and it will also have to play its next two home matches with a spectator restriction (50%).
