Faye, IMF chief to discuss Senegal’s economic reforms in Washington

SENEGALESE President Bassirou Faye will meet International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva in Washington on Tuesday as part of discussions on the country’s economic outlook and reform programme.

An IMF spokesperson confirmed the meeting, saying the discussions would focus on recent economic developments in Senegal and progress under its economic reform programme.

Faye arrived in Washington on Monday for a two-day working visit scheduled to end on Sept. 15, according to a statement by Senegal’s Council of Ministers.

The engagement with the IMF chief is expected to provide an opportunity for both sides to review Senegal’s economic situation, ongoing reforms and measures aimed at strengthening the country’s public finances.

Senegal has been implementing economic reforms as it seeks to improve fiscal management, promote sustainable economic growth and address challenges affecting its public finances.

The government has also continued engagements with international financial institutions and development partners as part of efforts to support the country’s economic transformation.

Faye’s Washington visit is expected to include engagements on economic and development issues, with the meeting with Georgieva providing a platform to discuss the progress and challenges associated with Senegal’s reform agenda.

The IMF has remained a key international financial institution involved in supporting economic programmes across developing economies, including Senegal.

Faye is expected to leave Washington for Abu Dhabi, where he will undertake an official visit from Sept. 16 to 17.

The Abu Dhabi visit is expected to further strengthen Senegal’s bilateral and economic ties with the United Arab Emirates.

Faye, who assumed office in April 2024, has made economic transformation, improved governance and greater public accountability key elements of his administration’s agenda.

The president’s international engagements  comes as his administration seeks to attract investment and deepen partnerships to support Senegal’s development priorities.(Reuters/NAN)
